A Final Update & Some Recommended Reads
Saying goodbye to the monthly overload, and pointing you to resources across AI, global development, animal welfare and more
You may have noticed I haven’t sent out the monthly overload in a while, ironically there has been an overload of news about AI, biosecurity, animal welfare, global development and related topics which take a lot more time to stay on top of.
I have been focusing on my other substack ‘Global Development & Economic Advancement’, which covers a few of the same areas but in more depth. I’ve also started working on a syllabus for a 7 week program on impact in global development,
My deeper dive into global development1 means the monthly overload is unlikely to return, making this the last email for the MOEA Substack. However, I didn't want to leave without sharing some fantastic resources I've found valuable for staying updated on broader EA related news.
General EA & Related Organisations
Effective Altruism Forum Digest - The EA Forum team publishes a weekly digest to highlight relevant posts as well as announcements and opportunities
80,000 Hours - Mainly AI safety, biosecurity and longtermism, they also have a good supporters newsletter for more detailed news about the organisation
Rethink Priorities - Research think tank covering main EA causes and more
Open Philanthropy - Largest single funder of EA related organisations
Ambitious Impact - Mainly global development, animal welfare and some meta EA/biosecurity
Giving What We Can - Effective giving for most causes
Global Development
Global Development & Economic Advancement - I’m biased but I’ve tried to make a newsletter that covers the areas I think are important for global development
Yaw's Brief: Guns, Trade, Cobalt & Africa Beyond Colonialism - Probably my favourite newsletter, I don’t know how he writes so much whilst having a full time job. Also a lot of variety with economic histories of countries, book reviews and clear explainers of complex areas
An Africanist Perspective - Ken Opalo with very insightful commentary
Our World In Data - They have a twice monthly newsletter covering new data (mainly in global development but also other causes)
Devex - News coverage of the global development sector. Lots of different newsletters, I tended to find ‘Devex Invested’ the most interesting as it covers the largest financial movements
Global Developments - About economic development, past and present, from Oliver Kim, researcher at Open Philanthropy
Animal Welfare
Hive - Comprehensive round up of animal news
Open Philanthropy Farm Animal Welfare Newsletter - High level updates from Lewis Bollard

Works in Progress - Examines technological, scientific, and social progress through long-form articles
Human Progress - Good news related to progress (weekly ‘Doomslayer’ newsletter)
What's New Under the Sun - Matt Clancy from OP with innovation policy news
Jacob Trefethen's blog - Another OP researcher with good posts on science policy
Other
Forecasting - Prediction markets, forecasting methods, and applications to decision-making, by Nuño Sempere
Sentinel's Global Risks Weekly Roundup - Newsletter summarises events that could be predictive of large-scale catastrophes, often with forecasts from the Sential team
Fix the News - Good news from around the world, a mix of global health and conservation
I still have an interest in all these areas, just less time to stay up to date with the cutting edges. And it seemed that although global development is less neglected more generally, it is more neglected within the meta EA space
Super interesting, thank you!
Really enjoyed the Overload, very nutrient dense, thanks so much David!
